Valerie Nelson- Owner & Director of Voice & Theater

Valerie Nelson is one of the co-owners and head of Voice and Theater at Dynamic Ballroom and Performing Arts.  She leads a fully staffed voice faculty full of excellent teachers, serving close 100 voice students from beginners to advanced. Valerie’s passion is in teaching and helping her students in their vocal and performing goals.  She finds great joy in watching her students perform and find success.

In recent years, Valerie launched Dynamic’s theater division and is thrilled with its rapid growth. The program now offers weekly theater classes, musical theater combo classes, seasonal musical theater camps, and a full summer educational theater season. Watching theater flourish within the community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.

As a professional contralto, Valerie earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Florida State University. She has performed internationally in both opera and oratorio. Some of her favorite roles include Carmen in Bizet’s Carmen, Dame Quickly in Verdi’s Falstaff, and Aldonza in Man of La Mancha. Among oratorios, Handel’s Messiah holds a special place in her heart for its beautiful melodies written for the true alto voice.

Valerie is married to her husband, Tyler—also an opera singer—who teaches at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University as a voice instructor and director. They share three wonderfully talented musical children who continuously encourage and support her in all of her creative and business pursuits. Valerie considers herself incredibly lucky to have such a supportive family by her side.
